If you cook your turkey in the right way then it makes a really nice tasting meal and is the highlight of any family gathering, but if you cook it wrong then it turns into a dry and tasteless mess. I think the best way to cook a turkey is to fry it, that way it keeps all the juices inside the meat, and yet makes the skin nice and crispy, so you get moist, tender meat to enjoy. Cooking it in an oven like most people do just dries it out.
When it comes to frying your turkey then most people like to use a propane one, probably because it is a bit faster and seems cooler to have it out in the yard cooking while you are out there, but I am always worried about starting a fire with them, or knocking it over. If you use an indoor electric turkey fryer instead then it will be up on the side with a cover on it so you don’t need to worry as much about it being knocked over (unless you have a dog who jumps up on the counter) and it has a thermostat on it to regulate the temperature for you, so you can just sit back and relax.
You need to fry a turkey for about 3-4 minutes per pound, so your average 14lb turkey would be about 42 – 56 minutes (once the oil has gotten back up to temperature), then check it with a meat thermometer before serving just to be sure. Serve it up with lashings of gravy and lots of potatoes and other trimmings and you have a great meal for the family to enjoy any time of the year, not just on Thanksgiving.
